I Have a Guitar Riff. Where Do I Go Next?

A riff does not need a finished song around it before it can move.

Play it

A keeps its pulse; A′ changes the landing

Riff A

Riff A′ — one note changes
2420350

Play A twice and notice its low A–C pulse, repeated attack, and open-A return. A′ keeps that identity and lifts one bass note to D before the return, so it answers without becoming a different riff.

Try another reading

Keep the notes and move only the second bar’s first attack off the beat, or leave the final beat empty. The opening pulse still tells your ear that A′ belongs to A.

Try this

Play A twice, name the one thing you hear as its identity, then record three A′ versions changing only the ending, one rhythmic placement, or the amount of space. Keep the one you would actually play again.
